"…continually be transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you may be able to determine what God's will is-what is proper, pleasing, and perfect. " Romans 12:2

I was sitting in a church service and the pastor told a story of how he was on a plane flying home from a conference. When his neighbor asked what line of work he was in he replied “Insurance.” The seatmate was the friendly sort and probed further, “Do you have a specialty?” To which the pastor replied “Fire and Life.” The congregation laughed in response.
It is true that once you “come to Jesus” you are insured from the fires of hell and are granted eternal life. But I think the Gospel message is so much more than just “fire and life insurance.”
Recently, a corporation president came to our office. He and my boss were discussing how his company planned and made decisions. Brett explained Christian Humanism –the belief in Christ for salvation but not much else. When it comes to life decisions, business transactions, kid rearing, car purchases – Christian Humanists trust in themselves and other human beings to provide the needed direction / answer. Leaving God, for the most part, out of their daily lives….they gain a Savior, but leave out the Lord.
Jesus is both. He is both Savior AND Lord. He is the complete package – you can’t get one part without the other. If you are operating with just the former and not the latter you are missing out.
How does Jesus become Lord of your life? You ask him. He is an absolute gentleman and will not go against your will…if he is invited he will make suggestions and ask if you will alter, change, submit, move, shift, surrender, modify, vary, adjust, or yield an area. Transformation occurs if you do.
If Jesus is just a Savior the transformative process is stunted and waylaid. The renewing of your mind comes when he is made Lord over all.
Think of a house. God buys it at a costly price but is only given access to the main room. He owns the house and everything in it, but the tenant only lets him sit on the couch and they come and chat with him every once in awhile – when they have time.
What owner would stomach that? Would you buy a house that you don’t have access to all the nooks, crannies, closets and basements? Would you keep ownership of something that is decrepit, needs a ton of work, lighting, and transformation? Where the tenant either ignores you or says “NO!” to your appeal to freely upgrade / renew their surroundings?
Yes the tenant would have to go through some of the “pain” and inconvenience of the remodel. Yes, the occupant would have to surrender old ways of doing things in light of the new wiring and plumbing…but they would ultimately benefit for a long, long, long time.
Is Jesus your Savior and Lord – or just your Savior? Are you a Christian Humanist? What excuses are you using to justify your position? What fear holds you back from letting God fully transform your “house”? Is God allowed into all aspects of your house…or just certain rooms?
